Morning on Avenue of the Giants

Managing dynamic range in dappled light

This was early morning on the Avenue of the Giants. You really feel it there, that cool, damp air hanging under the canopy, a real stillness. I like to get out before any real traffic, just waiting for the sun to find its way through.

Then it happens. Those perfect shafts of light, cutting straight through the mist and the branches, hitting the road and those immense trunks. It’s a challenging shot to get right, trying to balance that bright light with the deep shadows without losing detail anywhere. The sheer scale of these trees is humbling.

The road just curves, inviting you deeper into the forest. It feels ancient, quiet, just the sounds of the forest waking up. I try to capture that feeling, that sense of wonder, when I'm out there.
