Deep Dive Jellyfish

Underwater photography, artificial light

Coming up from a pretty deep dive at Gordo Banks, Mexico, I started seeing a whole lot of these jellyfish. They were everywhere, just drifting. It's always a surprise when you hit a patch like that, an unexpected bonus.

You'd think this was taken at night, right? But it was actually the middle of the day. The water was just so deep, and the light gets swallowed up fast. That's what gives it that stark black background, really makes the jellyfish pop.

This one just swam right into the frame, perfect. The colors are incredible, all those pinks and blues in something so delicate. Definitely got lucky with this capture, no doubt about it.
